About Artist

Daniel Scotland was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1998 to a creative family. Both of his parent studied fine art and bestowed upon him a natural affinity for drawing from a young age. He studied Art at Boroughmuir High School, where he was awarded the prestigious Paolozzi prize for talent and creativity. Following this he took a year out to create a portfolio, mature his artistic practice and take part in a month long painting and drawing course in Berlin. Daniel then came back to Edinburgh in order attend the foundation course at Granton college and has since moved on to the Contemporary Art Practice HND course, which he complete in 2021.

Statement

Daniel’s work spans a range of mediums, sculpture, painting and drawing being his speciality. His work comments on how the public are expected to view art, and often promotes interaction. This comes from a desire that Daniel has for his art to be relatable and accessible to all who encounter it, and a resentment toward the restrictive atmosphere that art is primarily exhibited through. Through his three-dimensional work, Daniel is most concerned about how the material or medium he uses can speak for itself, and what inherent meaning it holds. Artists such as Piero Manzoni and Gordon-Matta Clark have inspired Daniel to explore the Artistic qualities and value of objects. Daniel’s painting and drawing work almost exclusively depicts the human figure, with an interest in capturing the way the body moves, reflects light, reacts to gravity or changes shape under physical touch.
