Tracy Emin

In the slideshow above is a selection of Tracy Emin’s work shown at the The white cube that I visited during my college trip to London. They all seem to evoke the anguish experienced in traumatic times. In Emin’s case, the pain and confusion of having an abortion or finding out you have cancer.

In my project I seek to find a way to show the human condition and how we are able to be disgusted by the human body, whether body dysmorphic hatred of our own, or phobic repulse at another’s. Looking at Emin’s work, she is able to convey complex emotions and situations in relatively simple works, using muted mid tone blocks or colour and dark red and blue expressive lines. Her primary colour lines creating figurative shapes of herself in turmoil. I think I could take a lot from Emin, and would like to explore figurative studies of myself in as similar style.

Coming to the end of my project, I am in need of refining my experiments into a final work. Before this felt like it had to be a week long painting filled with detail, but i think I could probably start working more expressively on larger scales and create something more thought provoking and successful.
