WAWWA ARTIST’S

Kurt Schwitters

Kurt Schwitters was an artist working in the 1900’s in a range of medium’s, from painting and sculpture, to poetry and typography. I however, am most interested in his collages, the art form he gained the most fame for. After searching for a means to capture the chaos of my living space, I saw reflected in Schwitters work the pile of dirty washing I had used to collage with earlier in this project.

The way Kurt Schwitter’s layers the different materials and fabrics in his 2D collages, combining straight and torn edges, plays with perspective. This inspiration in my work can be seen in my collage/self portrait.

Schwitters’ use of different materials and the overlapping of said materials like that of the flaps of a cardboard box, conveys the chaos inspired by my depressing living space. However the combination of collage and self portrait doesn’t seem to have the effect I had intended it to, and my straight forward self portraits have a far more striking effect and hold a lot more raw emotion. For this reason I will move forward from this method and concentrate on my drawing’s, such as this self portrait.
