Tracy Emin ‘My Bed’

Working with very similar subject matter, Tracy Emin’s simple yet impactful piece ‘My Bed’ perfectly embodies the feelings and atmosphere I am trying to provoke through my own work. The powerful imagery of an overflowing ashtray or a bare and stained mattress can be seen reflected in my own subject matter, my overflowing washing basket or bed covered in miscellaneous items.
‘My bed’ is relatable, and the connotations of mental health and depression are immediately understandable. This is managed through a very literal and honest piece of art. This makes me critical of how I am managing to convey my theme, and is inspiring me to create more accessible and understandable pieces.
Lee Lozano
Lee Lozano’s work, especially her coloured pencil works, have inspired the freedom and expressiveness shown in my drawings throughout this project. Her inclusion of the written word can also be seen throughout my developments. What most captivates me about her work however, is that you are able to see how she felt through her expressiveness.
Lee Lozano manages to create natural flowing depictions of inanimate objects. giving rigid, hard things, such as hammers and guns, organic human-like qualities. At first glance of Lozano’s work, I was critical of her drawing style, thinking that it was childlike and thoughtless. But after exploring further, and experimenting using a similar drawing style I have come to understand the intricacies.
