Flowers on the grave development

In order to develop my piece ‘Flowers on the grave’ (working title), I am exploring different ways i can refine the work in order to create a more complete and visually stimulating artwork. In my first experiment, I created solid mounds of wet tissue which resulted in it being difficult to embed the roses. I have therefor now used rolled snakes of wet tissue to allow the roses to pass between them. I have also increased the size of the skull to allow for the adornment of more flowers.

Creating a conceptual piece I must be wary of the connotations of all materials used. Roses for example are often romanticised and I am worried there meaning will be misconstrued. I have therefore been exploring the symbolism of flowers and plants that could replace the roses in this work. I have discovered that gorse (the flowers covering Arthur’s seat) are symbolic of fertility. Fertility being an inherent factor of life and birth, it relates to my theme and my interest in how death is an essential element to life, but birth and therefor fertility is also equally essential.
