Born the 25th of July 1956 in Cheshire England, to Methodist parents, who instilled a hard work ethic into him from a young age. Andy Goldsworthy began working on farms from the age of 13, a part of his life that translates into his work in sculpture. This can be seen in his works that in Goldsworthy’s own words required a similar rhythmic approach as picking potatoes. Goldsworthy studied fine art at the Bradford College of Art for one year and then a further 3 years at the Preston Polytechnic (now the University of Central Lancashire), where he attained his bachelor of arts degree.

Andy Goldsworthy creates meticulous works, heavily based on craft, from dry stone walls to fragile constructions of twigs held together only by ice. The temporary nature of Goldworthy’s art inspired my work greatly. The idea of a sculptural piece being painstakingly constructed only to fall apart as the sun rises I find deeply poetic. I would love to create installations or sculptures that are as much performative as they are standalone works of art.

Goldsworthy’s art is often installed in nature, and is therefore site-specific. His work makes use of found materials such as leaves, twigs, ice or stones and through doing id very unpredictable. He has commented on how challenging working with such materials can be, but feels as if he has to. that working with materials he cannot edit his materials and must work with nature as a whole.
